FRAMING, ANGLES AND EYELINE

  • Your self-tape should be filmed in landscape.

  • Use a mid shot, from the waist up.

  • The camera should be center and level to your face. Use shoeboxes or books to lift.

  • Your eyeline should be approximately 15cm to the left/right of the camera lens.

  • Find a room that has good natural light - light behind camera directed towards you.

  • Make sure the room you are filming in is quiet, i.e. no echoes/traffic noises, etc.

PERFORMANCE DO'S AND DON'TS

DO

Read the brief and sides (script) properly and keep complicated stage directions and prop use to a minimum – use your imagination and know your lines before you start. Self-taping is great because you can film it multiple times before you select but don’t overdo it – as it can lose its power.

DO

For short reaction performance please do a 'rolling take' and repeat the line / action / reaction 3 or 4 times with a pause in between each one giving us a variety of options on the delivery of performance.

DON'T

Record with a dirty lens! Clean the lens of your phone or laptop – it's a common mistake that makes videos look soft focus or blurry.

DO

Keep the background 'clean' and unfussy. BUT it's better to have good lighting on your face than a clean backdrop. So find the best place in your home and make it workable for you.

DON'T

Stand under a light even if it has a clean background - a big no no – overhead lighting can cast shadows on your face and make you look orange and old. Always find good natural light when possible.

DO

Have a reader with you. Ensure that your reader DOESN'T act especially if they are not an actor. They just need to say the lines softly and clearly, off camera.

DON'T

Try record the other person’s lines yourself - this messes with your pace and performance, so is really not ideal.

DO

Watch your takes before you send them. You may notice a mistake or 10 – so best to fix it before you send. Please submit 2 or 3 of your BEST takes per scene.
